The Zen Commandments Ten Suggestions for a Life of Inner Freedom Dean Sluyter Books

The book and audio set are among my favorites on meditation. Light-hearted and fresh. Not limited to Zen.

Note that the CD set is a series of talks, not a reading of the book. The talks are based on the book (or vice versa) but the talks cover more territory.

The Zen Commandments Ten Suggestions for a Life of Inner Freedom Dean Sluyter Books Reviews

I had the pleasure of meeting Dean in my Aikido dojo. He is truly a disciple of his own teachings. He draws people to him through his effortless style and cheerfullness. I since purchased the The Zen Commandments and have read and reread it. It is a very easy read, but with profound yet simple advise on how to enjoy life. I highly recommend this book to any one.
Exquisitely written. No preaching. Much appreciated.
It is like a manual for spiritual practice. The approach is low key, practical, encouraging, non-threatening. I have a very positive feeling about the suggestions in the book and know I will turn to it periodically.
Perfect gift for my necie!
Just like much of our lives, we over complicate the search for happiness, meaning, and spirituality.

Sluyter encourages us to relax, be light-hearted, and realize that the answers lie in simply living our regular lives, but being fully engaged in them.

My own life changed drastically from the inside out when I simply started spending a minute here and there to just completely concentrate on what I am doing in the present moment.

For example, I may be walking, and then I'll concentrate on just walking, and saying to myself "I'm stepping...". I don't do this all the time, just when the thought strikes me. As this becomes a habit, this "descending into the present moment" will feel like a cloak of happiness around you.
What I really love about this book is that it is easy to read and has so many practical suggestions. The author presents these spiritual concepts in a way that everyone can understand. The examples are great, too. I highly recommend it for everyone! Side note I'm not a Buddhist.
Overall, the writing is light and entertaining while also containing deep thoughts. The author draws from a wide range of spiritual writings as well as literature and even music lyrics. My only criticism is that the author often makes blanket generalizations (ie, most people are zombies walking around asleep -- but of course the people reading his book are superior).
The book and audio set are among my favorites on meditation. Light-hearted and fresh. Not limited to Zen.

Note that the CD set is a series of talks, not a reading of the book. The talks are based on the book (or vice versa) but the talks cover more territory.
