Gristwood's grasp of Elizabethan history is evident from her previous nonfiction books about those times. "Arbella" and "Elizabeth and Leicester" are excellent histories, well written and researched. In "The Girl in the Mirror" Gristwood introduces a fictional character into the maelstrom of intrigue devouring the court. Jeanne is a Protestant refugee and orphan, and was disguised as a boy by her protector to avoid potential trouble. She manages to gain employment with Robert Cecil, the queen's right-hand-man, and becomes an unwitting participant and spectator of the tumultuous events unfolding around her. As she matures, she must confront the dilemma of her male disguise. This was an entertaining and enlightening read!Tags : Girl in the Mirror [Sarah Gristwood] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Sarah Gristwood,Girl in the Mirror,HarperCollins Publishers,0007379048

While I could appreciate the fine prose and the metaphors of gardens/plants/stylisation/maintenance and nature versus culture that was woven throughout, this tale of identity, female independence and intrigue never really grabbed me the way it appears to have other readers. Still, I appreciate Gristwood's feel for the era and her writing, both of which are excellent. The story and central characters just never really took root (forgive the pun).
