The description might sound like a lot of other YA fantasy novels, but it's like this perfect mashup of all the best bits so who cares. The pacing absolutely barreled through the plot, yet did a complete job of worldbuilding and never felt like it glossed over anything important. There was seriously not a single page where I was bored... do you know how rare that is?!

So basically Prince Casimir and Emelina are caught in the middle in a pretty messy web of loyalties, ethical debates over the actions of their parents, and their eventual feelings for each other. (Let's take a moment to appreciate the slow burn romance that works). I loved how there really is no villain and nothing is black/white. Everyone's done something to hurt the other side, so the conflicts keeps escalating in the name of revenge and self-preservation. It’s not super deep or anything -- it's just nice to find a more believable YA fantasy plot that isn't overly simplistic.

I genuinely LOVED all of the characters and the alternating POVs between Cas & Em. I like when authors let you get a solid sense of a character through their actions, observations, and what they deem to be choices instead of just describing them with cliche adjectives (or worse, leaving them as an empty shell to spout dialogue). For such a fast plot, the characters are impressively complex, flawed, diverse, and grow so much throughout just a few chapters. And I realllllly appreciated that Em isn't some "Chosen One" princess with the magic her sister has, yet doesn't let herself be defined by being ordinary either — she just does what she can with what she has.

Also, I super love how men and women are equal in this book without either of their identities stemming from the presence and strength (or lack thereof) of the other. Too many authors try to make their YA heroines "strong" by having them be rude to men or by emphasizing the absence of a man in the women's achievements (which is still defining women through men). All of the characters here are strong in their own right. (And I'm also tired of seeing gratuitous rape scenes & the absence of LGBTQ characters in some fantasy novels for the sake of "historical accuracy"). In this story, Olso has female warriors, Lera’s general is a woman, a prominent character is gay, and none of it's touted as a big deal. So that's a smaller detail in execution, but I thought it was really well done.

“Ruined,” a non-stop action ride, involving fighting, magic and romance. This novel contains little downtime constantly hopping from one action sequence to the next, with an occasional separation of this for some romantic scenes. A great novel for someone looking for a fast paced book that is easily consumed.

Em, a Ruined warrior seeking vengeance for the death of her family and the whereabouts of her sister, marries Prince Casmir under the identity of his betrothed Mary. Prince Casmir, the son of the King who slayed her family. Em hopes that by marrying Casmir, she can exact her revenge and bring the house of Lera down around her.

This novel defied my expectations. Since it is part of a series I believed that Em’s identity would be revealed at the end and the novel would leave on cliffhanger where Casmir has to hunt her down for this betrayal. I was worried about his happening because it felt predictable and resembled many other series I have read where someone dons a fake identity. Surprisingly this didn’t happen and it made it an even better novel for it. It allowed Cas and Em to work through there issues with each other and reveal their personalities making the sequel “Avenged” a read I am looking forward to.

A violent and bloody novel you will be swept away by the vast amount of fight scenes and the kickass action heroine known as Em.
Loved it - which is funny because this book has gotten such mixed reviews, I had held off on reading it. I'm glad I took a chance, it was a good read for those of us who like young adult dystopia but also like a good romance novel. I found this story perfect for someone like me, I don't need a ton of world building and don't really relish gratuitous violence - this story found the happy medium. Em is a Ruined, a people who are being systematically killed by the kingdom of Lera. So she goes undercover as the Lera prince's intended, they end up marrying, but this does not stop Em's plan to destroy the Lera kingdom. Of course things don't go smoothly and Em ends up falling in love with the Prince, Cass. I like how he also falls for her and even when he finds out about her betrayal, and tries hard to not love her, still can't do it.
The story moves at a quick clip, people are killed (it wasn't sugar coated) and the only bad news, it is book one of a series, so now I must wait till 2017 for book 2, urgh!
I agree there were some editing mistakes, that I even found, so hopefully the editors will do a better job for book two.
Highly recommend for older teens (there is mention of sex in the book) and adults like me (see description above), I finished the book in three days.
Another author panel book. A dark fairy tale about a girl, Emelina, who comes from kingdom, Ruina, that has been destroyed. Her family was murdered, except for her sister who was taken prisoner by the neighboring kingdom of Lera. Now, she poses as the girl destined to marry Lera’s Prince, Casimir, so she can rescue her sister and bring Lera down from the inside. The premise has so much potential, but I can see a lot of ways for it to fail. Fortunately it succeeds. I thought it would be a little too dark for my taste, but I was pleasantly surprised. Emelina burrowed her way into my heart and would not let go. She is so broken, but also a beautiful character. I really rooted for her and will definitely pick up the sequel to see what happens to her.
